There are people in this world who do not want others to believe the bible. They say imagine a world without "commandments." They may do this to encourage people to get away from "legal systems" like courts who constantly ask for tax money. They may also do this to encourage people to think seriously about what "rules" are actually useful for "today" and what rules are for "that time." Essentially, they seek to create a world where "no one" is guilty of putting Christ on the Cross. But in TRUTH EVERYONE is guilty and he forgave us for our sin (read John 3:16).
To be spiritually enlightened, it is BETTER to have God's LAWS in mind and heart than to not know God's LAWS! If you are traveling through dangerous territory (this world) you will have more equipped knowledge of how to deal with the "liars," the "cheaters," the "adulterers," the "gossips," the "racists," the you name it. We WOULDN'T need so many "court rules" from a court if people actually knew and LOVED God's laws!@! (Psalm 119).
The circular argument by people who claim that we can't prove God exists, is like trying to prove that Jewish people don't exist just as the "heart-beating" in a person exists. They exist and GOD was there at the first Passover when the Egyptians buried their first-born, crossed over the red-sea and 40 years later crossed the river Jordan on dry ground. It takes FAITH to believe this AND there is proof that these events and other biblical events took place! Check out resources like this: http://www.yah-tube.com/videos/rood/index.html
Now, how to deal with people who don't admit truths? Simply KNOW what they know and keep up with their "knowledge base," so to speak. They may know a thing or two about the squirrels, the platypus and the whales. They may know some herbal remedy to cure pancreatitis. They may know someone who knows someone who knows someone special. In other words, the "unrighteous folks" are not out there to "get-you" necessarily, they simply haven't acknowledged the truth of the scripture as you see it and they don't use it as their knowledge base necessarily (Luke 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.) Surprisingly some "unrighteous folks" DO have a supernatural or historical knowledge base to the stories of the bible. Maybe they are aware of the story of the "wise men" of the bible and who they were......maybe they know a thing or two about Queen Esther and where she lived. What ever the case may be, spiritual freedom starts with acknowledging spiritual truths.
There are ways to gain more "biblical knowledge base" one way is through the way a person meditates on the scripture.
Try 101 ways to Read and Study the bible.

For understanding the "bible holidays in historical reference" try: Ways to build understanding of biblical holidays and themes through calendar study (assists with creation studies): http://raggedycottagegarden.blogspot.com/2014/12/qumran-calendar-template.html
A person in general may study the bible in various ways. They may use any of the following methods. Make SURE you include the TORAH(LAW which means schoolmaster) and GOSPEL together in-order to make full-sense of the scripture.
TORAH METHODS - Jewish methods of study, including Parashah method
STORY METHOD - simply absorb and comprehend each story
INDEPENDENT METHOD - connect the "dots" between patterns in the scripture as it relates to everything else in life and in the bible.
RANDOM PASSAGE METHOD- open up the bible and believe it as inspired (aides in eliminating hypocrisy in the heart and mind of the church body)
HOLIDAY METHOD - Base the readings on time of the year and biblical holidays or a church theme or pattern (be wise about what holidays are biblical and what are traditions based)
Try study with a commentary to build more faith and understanding like www.ttb.org, or www.blueletterbible.org
